Means of plant origin. The action is due to the ester of borneol and isovalerianic acid, valepotriate and alkaloids (valerin, hotenin). The drug improves the effectiveness and quality of sleep. Sedation is slow, but stable enough. Valerianic acid and valepotriates have a weak antispasmodic effect. In addition, the complex of biologically active substances of Valerian officinalis exerts a choleretic effect, enhances the secretory activity of the mucous membrane of the digestive tract, slows down the heart rhythm and dilates the coronary vessels. Regulation of cardiac activity is carried out through neurohumoral mechanisms and a direct effect on automatism and the conduction system of the heart. The therapeutic effect is manifested with a systematic and prolonged course of treatment. The drug causes a decrease in spontaneous and increased excitability of the central nervous system, has a moderate anticonvulsant effect. The drug does not have a local irritant effect.

Side effects

Children. The drug is not used in children.

Valerika enhances the effect of sleeping pills, tranquilizers, sedatives, anxiolytic, analgesic, antispasmodic drugs, central antihypertensive drugs, antipsychotics, ethyl alcohol, nootropic drugs, drugs for anesthesia, curare-like muscle relaxants.

Combined use with synthetic sedatives is not recommended.

Concomitant use of alcohol should also be avoided.


Symptoms: possible fatigue, general weakness, headache, dizziness, drowsiness, cramping and abdominal pain, nausea, chest tightness, tachycardia, trembling hands and dilated pupils, decreased hearing and visual acuity.

Treatment: stop using the drug, rinse the stomach, take activated charcoal. If necessary, carry out symptomatic therapy.

There have been reports of the development of withdrawal syndrome (delirium) after taking very high doses of valerian root for several years (about 30 g / day).
